Press release Albania, La Guajira
11 March 2010
It is well-recognized the policy of Cerrejón to carry out its operations respecting and promoting the Human Rights of employees, contractors, third parties involved in its operations, its clients, and the general public. Under such context, Cerrejón vehemently rejects the threats that Karmen Ramírez Boscán, leader of Wayuu Women Force (“Fuerza de Mujeres Wayuu”), a Non-Government Organization – NGO, and her workmates have been receiving. In the past, members of the Wayuu community have suffered from the actions of outlaw criminal groups. This story must not be repeated.

Likewise, Cerrejón rejects the death threats received in 2009 by Mary Candy Díaz, a member of Cerrejón’s Human Capital team, and regrets the fact that these threats are happening again. In fact, Mary Candy is being persecuted because of her labors of follow-up the processes of the National Disability Rating Board (“Junta Nacional de Calificación de Invalidez”).

Cerrejón and its Union organization, Sintracarbón, have characterized themselves by their close collaboration in the rejection of violence. For that reason, this time we make a call to Sintracarbón, in the lead of Mr. Jairo Quiróz, its President, and to Mr. Esneider Correa, the leader of the self-denominated Association of Sick People in Cerrejón (“Asociación de Enfermos en el Cerrejón – Asodec”) so that hand-in-hand with Cerrejón’s Human Rights Program they promote amongst the workers and the Guajiran community a civic attitude targeted to the peaceful resolution of conflicts. Likewise, we invite the entire Guajiran society to join this effort for the promotion of democracy, the rule of law (legality) and the non-violence. Our joint target must be the construction of a peaceful society in La Guajira and in Colombia.
