In Cerrejón operations, residential, industrial and mining waters are sent for treatment to stabilization, retention and sedimentation ponds, located at the different pits, which jointly have a capacity of more than 8.4 million cubic meters, which are reused in dust control activities, as in different industrial processes such as coal dampen.
For quality control of the water, periodic samples are taken and physical, chemical and bacteriologic analysis are made to the following water ecosystems associated to coal mining and loading operations:
Ranchería River
Aguas Blancas Creek and New Mining Area creeks
Ranchería river water - bearing (underground waters)
Retention Ponds
Stabilisation (oxidation) ponds in Mine and Port
Puerto Bolívar coastal waters.
The results indicate that at the coal complex, the water resources have not suffered any alteration in their quality due to the operation.
