The desert conditions and the drought in the High Guajira make the supply of water critical for the Wayúu natives. We have worked with Corpoguajira in the rehabilitation of the windmills located alongside the railway corridor for the extraction of water from deep wells. With the participation of the community, the jagüeyes have been fenced in to avoid the contamination of the water that the Wayúus traditionally use for human consumption, due to domestic and animal waste.
Along the lines of this initiative and according to its commitment with the processes aimed at the development of La Guajira, Cerrejón has been creating alliances with the local and department governments, as well as with several institutions in order to implement concrete actions that can offer the communities in the area of influence new options for the permanent supply of water which is apt for human consumption.
Consequently, Cerrejón has carried out several actions, among which the following can be mentioned:
An agreement for approximately $ 1630 million pesos with the municipality of Barrancas and Corpoguajira to build water supply networks that will take drinking water to the indigenous communities of Trupio Gacho, Provincial and San Francisco, and which include the adaptation of a storage tank in the water treatment plant in Papayal for the benefit of over 1660 native residents of the above mentioned reservations.
As a result of an alliance with the Rotary Club of the Mine and with the Lomamato Indigenous Reservation in the jurisdiction of the municipality of Hatonuevo, an aqueduct was built and adapted, with an investment of 225 million, for this reservation which benefits approximately 1800 persons.
Additionally, within the Social Management activities of the Communities and Lands Division, through the Comprehensive Aide Plan for the Indigenous Community PAICI-, more than 580 tanks with a capacity of 1000 litres have been delivered to 21 indigenous communities located alongside the railway corridor; 160 in the indigenous communities of Media Luna, in the vicinity of Puerto Bolívar and more than 150 tanks in the communities of Roche, Chancleta, Patilla and in the Provincial Reservation in the municipality of Barrancas. The PAICI also supports the communities in the area of influence with the installation of windmills and the construction of jagüeyes.
