First Encounter of Former Residents of Tabaco

The families of the Tabaco Relocation Committee (“Comité de Re-localización de Tabaco – CRT”) led by José Julio Pérez, and the members of the Tabaco’s Endogenous Development Network (“Red de Desarrollo Endógeno de Tabaco”), led by Bautista Deluquez Arregocés, gathered during February 5, 6, and 7, 2010 at a reconciliation workshop arranged by Cerrejón in the city of Riohacha, La Guajira. Attendance was massive: more than 200 people from all generations (senior citizens, adults, youngsters, adolescents, and children) participated actively.

I was honoured that the representatives of the Tabaco Relocation Comitee asked me to assist as an independent facilitator in the negotiations with Cerrejón towards the settlement of outstanding issues, and was particularly delighted when, on December 12, 2008, the final agreement was reached.

December 23, 2008. Cerrejón made 43% of its indemnity and compensation payments, totaling $778,660.61 US dollars. These payments were a product of the final agreement reached between Cerrejón and the Tabaco Relocation Committee (TRC), bringing about a solution to previously outstanding resettlement issues.

Elis Arregoces, Ayarid Molina, Ana Solano, Edelis Guerras, Enrique Elias Arregoces, Javier Arregoces, Alcides Arregoces, Amauris Gil, Pedro Diaz, Rosiris Gil, Nestor Ustate, Dolores Pinto, Luzmila Gil and 6 more former residents of Tabaco have now established their life and productive projects, with Cerrejón support through the Tabaco Endogenous Development Network, which has allowed them to strengthen their family units and provided them with economic stability.
