Cerrejón’s Commitment with the Tabaco Relocation Committee (TRC) Stands Out During this Holiday Season
 15 April 2009

December 23, 2008. Cerrejón made 43% of its indemnity and compensation payments, totaling $778,660.61 US dollars. These payments were a product of the final agreement reached between Cerrejón and the Tabaco Relocation Committee (TRC), bringing about a solution to previously outstanding resettlement issues.

On December 12, 2008, in the Dialogue Table between representatives from Cerrejón and the TRC, an agreement was signed that allowed Cerrejón to take immediate action in order to pay compensations before Christmas of 2008.

In an accelerated coordination with BBVA Bank S.A. on December 18, Cerrrejón signed an agreement that guaranteed the appropriate administration of these payments. These checks, totaling the amount of compensations accorded with the TRC, were delivered as early as possible on December 22, at the BBVA Bank location in the city of Riohacha, La Guajira.

This first exercise gave BBVA the opportunity to make adjustments in the payment procedure, thus allowing the process to continue more efficiently in the upcoming days.

In 2007, Cerrejón approached former Tabaco residents to understand their needs and promote their sustainable livelihoods. The Tabaco Endogenous Network was born and Cerrejón began funding numerous socio-economic projects and initiatives seeking to build genuine mutual trust. On April 2008, in its response to the Independent Third Party Review Panel, Cerrejón publicly committed to carry out what the Panel had established in its report.

Cerrejón will actively continue to work and monitor the progress of all its public and internal commitments, always with the goal of being clearly perceived by the communities in La Guajira as both a good partner and a good neighbor. The company will continue to strive for the long-term sustainability of La Guajira; a sustainability that goes beyond that of coal mining.
