CULTURE IN ROCHE IS ALIVE AND WELL!
30 December 2009
Recognition of the cultural identity of the communities forms an important part of the resettlement processes that are taking place. In compliance with the international standards of the World Bank, by which our processes are governed, and echoing the words of the President of Cerrejón, Mr. Leon Teicher, uttered on 19 December, we have done, not "the minimum necessary, but the maximum possible" to ensure that the community of Roche is united around its culture.
A central theme of these festivities was the recovery of the community´s gastronomic past, and the residents of Roche sampled what they called "Ancestral Palates", and they enjoyed the collective creation of the play about the past and present of their people. The members of the community, with the support of the Department of Social Responsibility, got together and prepared the delicious dishes that identify them as natives of Roche, coming from a land that has granted them exotic fruits such as the Sahara palm, which for years provided food for their grandparents and great grandparents, and which have been passed down from generation to generation.
As samples of its delicious cuisine, participants also tasted Maya honey, Chilonga, coconut buns, beef marinated in oil and left in the sun, and many more dishes. Everyone who prepared the delicious dishes explained how to make them and shared some "secrets" that give a special touch to the food.
The date, close to the Christmas celebration, was also timely for the delivery of gifts to the children from Roche, which Cerrejón performs every year. The morning ended, and attendees, including special guests from the Town Hall of Barrancas, officials from Cerrejón, and the AMA Programme for Senior Citizens, witnessed the roots and importance of the identity of a Community called Roche.
