Carbones del Cerrejón, the largest export open pit coal mine in the world that operates in La Guajira Department, is taking a new step forward to strengthen its social responsibility actions in benefit of the communities.
The Company has been successfully putting these actions into practice since 1984 through the Cerrejon Foundation, which now is going to multiply this effort by four, focusing its actions on La Guajira's priority problems and creating a System of Foundations, whose purpose is to seek even greater social management achievements to promote and support sustainable development projects in La Guajira, with resources of the Company and from other sources - both national and international - to be applied to different regional development programmes.
During 2007, Carbones del Cerrrejón invested over 5 million dollars in its social responsibility actions. Today, La Guajira's economy depends to a considerable extent on coal exports and this is reflected in the Company's intention to help to generating the means and alternative projects for the "Guajiros" to take advantage of the mining wealth resources to prepare for a better future.

Cerrejón Foundation for Progress in La Guajira
Focused on promoting projects to guarantee sustainable development in the region, with emphasis on entrepreneurial ventures and strengthening both working and professional abilities.
Cerrejón Foundation for Water in La Guajira, Aqua-Guajira
Water supply is one of the La Guajira's main problems. The search for solutions to water shortage, sanitation and hygiene, and water sources conservation is the axis of this Foundation's activity.
Cerrejón Foundation for Indigenous Development in La Guajira
The Foundation will be dedicated to improving its Indigenous communities' living conditions. It aims to strengthen the actions the Company has been carrying out since 1982.
Cerrejón Foundation for Institutional Strengthening in La Guajira
The resources generated by La Guajira's mining wealth make it vital for its regional institutions and communities to strengthen the administration of these funds. The Foundation will ensure that projects guarantee good investment of mining royalties and the other resources of the region.
