In the department of the Guajira, according to DANE, there are 20 indigenous reservations, located in 11 towns. According to the population census of 2005, in the Guajira 44,9% of the population in the census, a total of 278,212 people, registered themselves as belonging to indigenous groups. Almost 20% of the indigenous population of the country lives in the Guajira.
This reality is what Cerrejón, through its new Foundation, is seeking to address. A long tradition of working with the indigenous communities of the region through the Plan for Integrated Support for the Indigenous Community, (PAICI), established in 1982, which is directed at strengthening the social fabric of the indigenous peoples, has allowed the development of a clear understanding of the difficulties and needs of these communities and, within the framework of the new Foundation, has led to the focusing of action and broadening of the sources and resources for the programmes aimed at this population.
The objective of the Foundation, in conjunction with the indigenous communities established in the department of the Guajira, is to achieve a sustainable improvement in the quality of life, consolidating processes which involve the participation of all concerned and which are self governing, and developing innovative methodologies that recognise and value diverse visions of the future.
The programmes will be orientated towards the stimulation of social and cultural development of the indigenous communities established in the Guajira. Currently, the programmes being developed relate to nutritional support, water supply, basic sanitation, and productive projects
