In August of 2007, Cerrejón and its shareholders, Anglo American plc, BHP Billiton and Xstrata Coal, requested the review of its corporate social responsibility practices and its relation with neighbouring communities of La Guajira by an independent panel chaired by Dr. John Harker, President of Cape Breton University in Canada. Nick Killick, from International Alert; Salomón Kalmanovitz, Dean of Economics and Business Administration at the University of Jorge Tadeo Lozano in Colombia; and Elena Serrano, from the Foundation Casa de la Paz, an NGO in Chile, were also a part of this panel.
This webpage contains the most relevant information regarding the independent panel’s review and Cerrejón’s actions from 2008 up until today in response to their report.
