THE MINE



Requisites: To visit the Mine you must send a list with the names of all visitors and the number of their identification documents, at least 5 days prior to the visit, to the fax at the Visitors Centre. All visitors must carry their identification documents. If you are travelling in a private vehicle, it must be parked at the parking area next to the North Entrance of the Coal Complex.

  • The use of safety glasses and helmet is obligatory.
  • The use of sandals, open shoes or high heels, is not allowed.
  • For children the minimum height must be 1,48 metres.

    VISITS


    For technical, investigative or journalistic visits, a letter indicating purpose, date, and number of persons with their Id number, must be send at least 3 weeks in advance.

    Schedule: From Monday through Saturday between 7:00 and 11:30 A.M. and between 1:30 and 3:30 P.M. Sundays and holidays as per reserve. For safety reasons, in the event of rain there are no tours.

    Visit: Consists in the presentation of an institutional video and a tour on a 30 passenger bus, including Mushaisa residential camp area and arriving to a vantage point to observe a Cerrejon pit in production. At this site safety helmet and goggles are obligatory. Visits are escorted by a guide and have a total duration of two hours.

    Visitors Centre: Located at Mine entrance has a cafeteria where snacks and lunches are offered, this must also be co-ordinated in advance. Besides, there is a shop of handicrafts made out of coal.

    Location: The closest village to the Mine is Albania, La Guajira. The Cerrejón deposit is located in the Valley of the Ranchería river, 100 kms to the south of Riohacha, it is divided into three zones: north, central and south, located between the municipalities of Maicao, Albania, Hatonuevo, Barrancas and Fonseca. On the road it is one hour and ten minutes away from the Departments capital city, Riohacha, 2 hours from Valledupar and 4 hours from Santa Marta.

    Weather: dry most of the year with rainfall during the months of August and November, with an average temperature of 28º C.
