Safety, Health, Environment and Community Policy



"It is the policy of Cerrejón in its open pit coal mining, transport and shipping operations in La Guajira, and in its activities in other places where Cerrejón operates, to conduct its business in harmony with the Environment and Society"


It is the policy of Cerrejón in its open pit coal mining, transport and shipping operations in La Guajira, and in its activities in other places where Cerrejón operates, to conduct its business in harmony with the Environment and Society, to protect the Safety and Health of the employees and contribute to the development, well being, and culture of the communities within its area of influence, as well as to work towards the implementation of the best practices of the mining industry in terms of Safety, Health, Environment and the Community.

This policy will be developed through the aplication of a risk management system for Safety, Health, Environment and the Community, within a process of continuous improvement, under the following guidelines:

  • To design and maintain facilities and develop operational processes for the safeguard of people, property and the environment.

  • To carry out permanent efforts to identify and manage the risks associated with our activities.

  • To comply with all applicable laws and regulations, as well as with other assumed voluntary obligations. To apply our own standards when they exceed current legislation or in its absence.

  • To respond in a timely, effective and careful manner to the emergencies or accidents that could result from our operations.

  • To develop programs to promote Occupational Health and the well being of our employees.

  • To periodically evaluate the health of our employees in order to promptly identify and control work related risks.

  • To sensitize, train and commit our employees and contractors with Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law and the Voluntary Principles.

  • To maintain transparent relations with Private Security Contractors, with the Security Organizations of the State, and with the Army and Police, within the frame of the Voluntary Principles.

  • To Respect Human Rights, especially those of the indigenous communities, within Cerrejón's area of influence, preserving and strengthening their culture, identity, traditions and mores.

  • To respond opportunely to the concerns of neighboring communities and to make permanent efforts to cultivate friendly relations, open dialogue and cooperation.

  • To work jointly with communities and government institutions in projects that contribute to human development, to the improvement of living standards and the quality of life of the people within the framework of sustainable development.

  • Within the possibilities and required competencies of the operation, to offer employment opportunities, and in general, to strive to maximize the use of the resources available in the region and the country.

  • To train, engage and commit all employees and contractors to meet the objectives of this policy.

  • To develop adequate channels of communication to disclose our Health, Safety, Environment and Communities programs and to be aware of the concerns of the interested parties.

  • To implement periodic reviews and evaluation exercises to ensure compliance with this policy and to assess its progress.
