The policy at Cerrejón is to carry out its operations in such a way that the Human
Rights of employees, contractors, third parties, persons involved in its operations, clients
and the general public are protected, respected and promoted. It requires the same
commitment from its CONTRACTORS who, through each and every one of their
members, are responsible for the promotion, respect and protection of Human Rights in
every area where they execute their WORKS and/or SERVICES.
Part of this commitment has to do with the responsibility of making sure that Human
Rights are respected in the work places and assuring their respect in their wider scope
of influence. The ethical imperative is imposed as a safeguard of civic behaviour;
moreover, it is acknowledged that the respect for Human Rights contributes to
competitiveness in Cerrejón.
We expect compliance with our Human Rights Standards (Voluntary Principles and
United Nations Global Compact ) throughout the Organization. In Cerrejón it is not
tolerable or admissible for an employee or contractor to violate the laws or to develop
behaviours that can result in possible violations of Human Rights.
It is the duty of each and every employee, contractor, third persons involved in its
operations and clients to take the appropriate measures to prevent behaviours or
conducts that go against the principles contained in the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, in the Voluntary Principles and in the United Nations Global Compact. It is not
permissible to take reprisals against any employee or person who reports these
situations.
Violations against Human Rights are unacceptable for Cerrejón; therefore, no
employee, contractor or third person is allowed to achieve results by failing to comply
with this policy or with the principles consecrated in the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, and those contained in the Voluntary Principles. We will enforce compliance with
this policy under the awareness of behaviours in accordance with human dignity and
peaceful coexistence.
We acknowledge that the actions of governments in guaranteeing respect for Human
Rights continues to be essential; for this reason Cerrejón has decided to support
Government Programs on Human Rights and to lead regional efforts in their promotion,
respect and protection.
It is the policy of Cerrejón to maintain its relationship with Private Security
Companies and the legally constituted State Security Forces, within the highest
standards or practices and with the greatest transparency possible, thus developing
corporate behaviour in accordance with the Voluntary Principles; for this reason it trains
them and keeps them abreast of matters of Human Rights. Moreover, it will cooperate
within the State Security Forces that work for the security of Cerrejón with the same
purpose.
