According to its most accepted definition, it is "development that satisfies the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to satisfy their own needs” (WCED Bruntland Commission). According to Sustainable Development, Cerrejón combines economic, social and environmental elements generating added value to its product while contributing at the same time to the preservation of the environment and procuring a better quality of life of neighbouring communities.
The goal is to achieve social progress that recognizes the needs of all individuals, the effective protection of the environment, the prudent use of natural resources and the continuation of high levels of employment and economic growth.
The alignment of Sustainable Development Projects consists in aligning the current programs, directing them towards economic, social and environmental sustainability by using available internal and external resources.
With the creation of new projects and improvements of the existing projects, Cerrejón seeks the efficient use of resources, making them more productive and more environmentally profitable. In this way it adheres to the international agenda, using Sustainable Development initiatives that generate progress for the community and the region.
