Connect Yourself Colombia: A new life project for 114 Guajiran people

Departmental Forum

This meeting, which brought together representatives of local and national authorities, intellectuals, presidents of community action boards and NGOs on 18 November at the Convention Centre Anas Mai, was intended to create a space for discussion of different views on the sustainable development of the peninsula, and to design strategies to eliminate poverty, ensure the rights of the indigenous, and safeguard the environment.

One hundred and twenty (120) loggerhead reptiles (turtles) were freed at a new nesting site found in La Guajira.



Royalties Forum in the department of La Guajira

On 21 and 22 October, the Royalties and Development departmental forum was held at the Anas Mai convention centre in Riohacha in the department of La Guajira, which aimed to analyse the impact of royalties on the social development of the region and propose recommendations to maximise the benefit of their proper allocation and investment in the department.

Climate Change Summit in New York

Last September 22, at New York’s United Nations headquarters, and under a summons by the United Nations Secretary General, it gathered the Climate Change Summit, which gathered more than 100 world rulers. Its objective was to “mobilize the political will and the vision necessary so that, in the conversations about climate that the United Nations organizes in Copenhagen, an ambitious, agreed-upon, and scientifically grounded result is reached”.



320 Sea Turtles freed as part of Cerrejón’s Species Preservation Program

With the main purpose of continuing to work for the preservation of species under the danger of critical extinction, such as the case of the sea turtle, and as part of the program undertaken by Cerrejón in this regard, 320 turtles have been freed. The last 120 of them, of the loggerhead species, were freed together with the indigenous community resident in the Bahía Hondita area in Alta Guajira.

The recent Assembly of the United Nations that dealt with climate change and the next year-end conference at Copenhagen present a crucial subject for mankind’s future. The “de-carbonization” of the planet as a goal, has to deal with the use of coal, the only mineral that has preserved relevance for centuries as energy source. Its exploitation is a symbol of productive enclaves that show minimum contribution to the economy of the region where they are located and predate their geographic environment.



Study of the quality of life in the area of influence of Cerrejón

The National Bureau of Statistics, DANE, in agreement with Cerrejón, is to carry out the Quality of Life Survey in the catchment area of the mine, which in recent months was conducted in the rest of the country. This exercise will obtain up to date information on the living conditions of the inhabitants of this area, which will serve as a tool for analysis of the socio-economic situation of the region, and for the design of social policies.
