Unfortunate accident in a coal-storage silo at Cerrejón

Cerrejón notifies our workers and the community in general that there was an unfortunate accident today, August 4th of 2010, at approximately 7:50 pm during the repair works being carried out in one of the coal-storage silos at the crushing plants. A high platform on which a group of sixteen workers for the contracting companies Conconcreto and Ticom were standing gave way. Thirteen of these workers have been evacuated from the site and the remaining three we have not been able to rescue yet. The evacuees are being given medical attention at the Cerrejón medical facilities at the mine, and some have been transferred to the hospital in Maicao. One of the latter, Mr Carlos Enrique Pérez, who was in critical condition when rescued from the silo, later died around 10:45 pm on his way to the hospital.

The Mine

Directors and journalists of the country’s Association of Regional Autonomous Corporations and Sustainable Development (ASOCARS, its acronym in Spanish) visited Cerrejón to learn details of the coal-mining operations and to set up the permanent forum “Exercise of Environmental Authority Regarding Mining Concerns”. The aim of the forum is to consolidate actions to strengthen the association of the Regional Autonomous Corporations (CARs) as regards the exploitation of mineral resources and its possible impact on the environment.



Wildlife comes first at Cerrejón

Cerrejón is committed to exemplary ethical behaviour, respecting human rights and to contributing positively to the prosperity and development of the communities associated with its operations, including the indigenous Wayúu communities that co-exist with the mine, railway and port operations in La Guajira. Last Saturday, July 10, a joint venture agreement was signed in Riohacha to go forward with the construction of the Hotel WAYA GUAJIRA in the municipality of Albania. This project is part of Cerrejón’s initiatives and, in this case, of the Cerrejón Foundation for Progress in La Guajira. This new tourism complex will have an investment of over $23,000 million pesos, 8,100 m2 of floor space, 140 rooms, 17 cabins with 102 hammocks for ecotourism, a swimming pool, spa, restaurants, and a convention hall.



In Alta Guajira: Cerrejón Foundation for Water in La Guajira donates tanks for Potable Water Storage

La Mina. Responding to the need for storing water that communities affected by the drought in Alta Guajira have, Cerrejón Foundation for Water in La Guajira , in coordination with Cerrejón’s Social Management Division and Cerrejón’s Protection Division, made a donation of 20 tanks for storing potable water to the same number of families.



Young Talents (“Jóvenes Talentos”) 2009-2010: the Great Final Game

With a sample of great commitment and high technical performance by the children who conform the finalist soccer teams, last Sunday, June 13, at El Molino, there were conducted the closing games of the tenth version of the Departmental Tournament of Young Talents of Cerrejón (“Torneo Departamental Jóvenes Talentos Cerrejón 2009-2010”) in the Pony and Infantile categories that benefit more than 600 children of La Guajira.



20 YEARS RENEWING LIFE: CERREJÓN’S LAND RECLAMATION/ REHABILITATION PROGRAM

Two thousand seven hundred and eighteen (2,718) hectares reclaimed/rehabilitated, the timely preservation of more than thirty-six (36) million cubic meters of grounds and the planting of more than one million trees of forty (40) native species, are the main achievements of Cerrejón’s land reclamation/ rehabilitation program, the management of which is displayed in the celebration of the Day of the Environment that will be held at La Mina tomorrow, June 17.



Knowledge and Respect for our Wayuu Indigenous Communities

Departments of Cerrejón that are strategic in the relationships with neighboring indigenous communities have been undertaking a series of workshops of intercultural cohabitation and familiarization with the new national and international norms about fundamental rights of the Indigenous People. These workshops are directed by Weildler Guerra, a Guajiran anthropologist, currently an advisor for the Bicentennial celebration, among other positions.
